Remembering Ed Shapiro, Visionary Leader and Former SNHU President
The Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Ed Shapiro, a visionary leader whose lifelong dedication to education played a pivotal role in transforming SNHU into the institution it is today. Shapiro passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2025, at the age of 91.
As SNHU's third president, Shapiro led the university for 16 years and served as a catalyst in the development of what was then New Hampshire College (NHC). During his tenure, Shapiro was instrumental in achieving accreditation candidacy for NHC and relocating the college to its present-day location. There, he oversaw the construction of the first dorm and townhouse buildings, and initiated development of vital buildings such as the library, faculty offices, classrooms, computer lab and academic buildings. Inspired by his own military service and the challenges NHC faced during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, Shapiro forged the university’s military partnerships.
Shapiro was born in 1933, just one year after his parents founded the New Hampshire Accounting and Secretarial School, known today as Southern New Hampshire University. His father, Harry Alfred Benjamin “H.A.B.” Shapiro, served as founding-president from 1932 until his death in 1952, when Ed’s mother, Gertrude Shapiro, stepped in to lead as president until 1971.
Shapiro carried his parents’ legacy forward with dedication beginning in 1957 as the guidance director and athletics coordinator. Shapiro went on to serve as an instructor of typing and business machines, dean of faculty, administrative dean, and vice president. He served as president from 1972-1987.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the Shapiro family, who have been such an integral part of SNHU’s story and legacy,” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, President, SNHU. “I recently had the chance to have a long visit with Ed at his home and could feel the love and pride he had for SNHU. He was generous in sharing history and stories with me including how his family built NHC together. We will honor Ed’s memory and his enduring impact on our community.”
