Frequently Asked Questions
Does SNHU accept community college credits?
SNHU does accept credits from community colleges. In fact, we can take in up to 90 of them!
As long as your previous institutions are accredited, the team at SNHU can review your credits.
And because SNHU has already worked with transcripts from most community colleges across the country, it's even easier for your previous coursework to be reviewed.
If you have any questions during the transfer process, reach out to your admission counselor. They can help you with all of your enrollment needs.
Is SNHU real?
Sure is! And it's been real since 1932.
Southern New Hampshire University began as a two-room business school in downtown Manchester, New Hampshire. Today, the campus sits on 300 acres between Manchester and neighboring Hooksett with more than 3,000 students.
And SNHU Online is just as real. Launched in 1995, SNHU is considered both a pioneer and a leader in online education. It currently has over 170,000 learners and more than 160,000 alumni.
What colleges are easy to transfer into?
Colleges with a goal of student success are the ones that are easiest to transfer into.
That includes Southern New Hampshire University, where we have generous transfer policies. Here, you can transfer up to 90 credits – 75% – toward your bachelor’s degree.
Plus, SNHU has an open admission policy. That means the admission process isn't competitive: By showing that you've completed high school (or an equivalent), you can be admitted to the school easily.
And with 6 undergraduate terms a year, you can easily start when you're ready.
Is it better to transfer from a community college?
If you're succeeding at a community college, that's great!
At Southern New Hampshire University, we partner with community colleges across the country to create a seamless path from your associate degree to your bachelor's.
In fact, we encourage you to transfer to SNHU only after you've completed your associate degree:
- First, it allows you to take advantage of affordable community college rates at a school near you.
- Then, as a graduate of one of our partner schools, you'll receive a 10% discount on SNHU's already-low online tuition rates. (The same discount applies to campus students who've attended a partner community college in Massachusetts or New Hampshire.)
And because we've built relationships with so many two-year schools already, you'll get your free transfer credit evaluation quickly.
Is transferring from a community college hard?
Transferring couldn’t be easier when you apply your community college credits to a school that has taken care to establish a transfer-friendly environment.
From an academic perspective, you'll already have some coursework under your belt. You’ll know what college professors are expecting from you and you’ll know how to manage the workload. To transfer credits from a community college to a school like Southern New Hampshire University means you’ll have the experience to help you succeed.
From an administrative standpoint, you’ll work with SNHU admission counselors and academic advisors who are trained in how to maximize every one of your hard-earned credits.
We’ll accept up to 45 credits toward an associate degree and up to 90 credits for a bachelor’s degree.
What GPA do you need to transfer from a community college?
One of the benefits of coming to a new school from a community college is that while many of your credits may transfer, your GPA will not.
If your GPA was strong at your community college, don’t worry. The record of your academic excellence will stand on your transcript.
If, though, you didn’t get started on as strong a foot as you would have liked, no worries there, either. You’ll be able to receive credit for most, if not all, of your completed courses while starting fresh with a clean academic slate.
Every student at Southern New Hampshire University receives a free transcript evaluation. Our admission counselors and academic advisors can help you try to receive the maximum transfer credits possible.
SNHU transfer credits can be up to 45 credits toward an associate degree and up to 90 credits toward a bachelor’s degree. Generally, courses where you earned a C- or higher can transfer, providing that the course description and outcomes are comparable to the courses offered at SNHU.
The best part? Every course at SNHU was designed with transfer students in mind. Our course designers ensured that every course outcome, especially for our general education courses, is in alignment with most community colleges.
While we can’t guarantee that every course transfers over without conducting an audit of your transcript, rest assured that our curriculum was designed to be as transfer-friendly as it gets.
Does your GPA start over when you transfer?
In a manner of speaking, yes. Your grades at your original institution stay on record with that school. Any time you request a transcript from that school, the grades and the GPA will still be there.
If, however, your GPA isn’t quite where you know it could be, don't worry. While your credits can transfer, your previous grades won't factor into your new GPA or show on your Southern New Hampshire University transcript.
"Students will start fresh with their SNHU GPA upon completing their first term of classes with us here," said Amanda Jennings, an admission team lead with Southern New Hampshire University.
It's SNHU's way of removing yet another barrier to your success.
Will my community college credits transfer?
Chances are good that most or maybe even all credits earned at a community college will transfer to another accredited school.
At Southern New Hampshire University, we accept up to 90 credits toward a bachelor’s degree. That’s up to 75% of a typical bachelor’s degree. We have designed our general education curriculum to be in alignment with most community college curricula.
"I had an associate degree from a local community college, and all those credits transferred," said Blake Venable '24. "That put me about two years ahead."
Not only can many community college credits transfer, but they can be applied to over 200 degree programs at SNHU. Every program is accredited and taught by professionals working in their respective fields. You'll not only receive a high-quality education, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field. You’ll be able to make important connections and build your network.
We have made the transfer process as easy as possible because we want to ensure that every student gets the most out of their hard-earned credits.
What college credits will transfer?
Most students have to complete a suite of general education courses at the beginning of any degree. Those courses may include writing, math, statistics and social science. Often, these general education credits transfer to a new program.
"Transferable credits are college-level courses from a regionally or nationally accredited college that have a grade of C- or better (for undergraduate courses)," said Brielle Amazeen, a transfer credit specialist at Southern New Hampshire University.
At Southern New Hampshire University, we have designed our general education courses with community colleges in mind. We aimed to align our course outcomes with community colleges and other 4-year schools with intention. This means that students may transfer in as many of their hard-earned credits as possible when they’re ready to become students at SNHU.
Every student receives a free transcript evaluation from our admission team. Full consideration is given to transfer in as many credits as possible. SNHU transfer credits are designed to be generous and easy for every student.
We accept up to 45 credits toward an associate degree. We also accept up to 90 credits – that’s 75% – toward a bachelor’s degree.
Is it better to go to community college, then transfer?
The answer all depends on your needs and your chosen path to achieving your goals and dreams.
Community colleges can be a great choice. They allow you to attend school in your community, often at deeply discounted residential tuition rates. You could complete general education courses at your pace, often while working. When you’re ready, you can transfer many, if not all, of those credits toward an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree at another school.
Taking this path can save you precious money and time. This pathway also can allow you to start your college career prior to deciding on a major. Then, when you’re ready to specialize in a degree field, you can transfer to the school of your dreams.
(We’re hoping that school is Southern New Hampshire University.)
At SNHU, we work hard to make the transfer process as seamless as possible. We offer a free transcript evaluation to every incoming student. We accept up to 45 credits toward an associate degree. For a bachelor’s degree, we’ll take up to 90 credits.
Every course is taught by a professional in their respective field. And best of all, we offer one of the lowest online tuition rates in the country. A community college graduate from a partner school can receive a 10% tuition scholarship for our online courses.
And if you've attended a partner community college in Massachusetts or New Hampshire, you can put that same 10% discount toward on-campus tuition.
How soon can you transfer to another college?
While there's no hard and fast rule, generally you can transfer to another school as soon as you have one term of completed coursework on your transcript.
We encourage you to call us as soon as possible. We’ll conduct a free transcript review to provide you with the list of courses we’ll be able to apply to your degree at Southern New Hampshire University.
As part of that review, we may be able to identify work or life experiences that may count toward college credit as well.
Because we partner with community colleges around the country, we have many established curriculum pathways to make the transfer process as seamless as possible. We're ready to help you succeed in earning the degree of your dreams.
Why do so many community college students choose SNHU?
Many associate degrees earned at community colleges can fit easily into Southern New Hampshire University's bachelor's degrees.
If you've attended one of SNHU's partner community colleges, you may be eligible for benefits like:
- A simple admission process
- A 10% discount on SNHU's already-low online tuition rates, or a 10% campus tuition discount from Massachusetts or New Hampshire community colleges
- A number of transfer pathways, so you can see exactly how the courses you've taken can apply to an SNHU degree
“Everyone at SNHU was so wonderful,” said student Raquel Lopez about the admission process. Lopez had earned her associate degree about 20 years before enrolling at SNHU. “They wanted to help me, and I appreciated their help. It was very welcoming and warm.”
If your community college isn't a partner yet, reach out! (You'll want to mention the tuition discount.)
What's it like to transfer from a 2-year school to a 4-year school?
Transferring from any school can be a major life change. But if you're able to put in the work to finish an associate degree, we believe you can be just as successful at SNHU.
If you have concerns, we have advisors to walk you through any part of the process while you're here. And you're not alone: Since so many students come to SNHU with credits they've already earned, our team understands the concerns that transfer students have.
"Transferring in from a small community college to a large online college was a big change," said Lacey May '20. "But SNHU blew all the expectations I had out of the water."
Talk to an admission counselor today to find out if your community college is an SNHU partner.
