Frequently Asked Questions
Can I learn data analytics online?
Yes, you can learn data analytics online. In fact, there are many online courses for data analysts at all different levels.
Southern New Hampshire University offers a number of data analytics courses you can complete 100% online – while earning college credit. You can take just one or two courses to brush up on old skills or learn something new. Or you can enroll in one of our data analytics online programs, like the AS Data Analytics, BS in Data Analytics or MS Data Analytics.
Is an online data analytics course worth it?
When deciding whether a data analytics course online is worth it, you should consider 3 things: time, cost and outcomes.
Time is your most precious resource – so it's understandable you want to use it wisely. If you're looking at online courses, consider the length of the course, whether you have to participate in scheduled class times and how many hours it will take to complete.
Cost can range greatly, but for good reason. Not every online data analytics course is created equally, and a free course may or may not fit your goals.
As for outcomes, consider what kind of return you'll get on the investment of your time and money. Will you learn real-world skills that can help you in your career? Will you have something impressive to add to your resume? Will you receive college credits?
At SNHU, you can enroll in a number of courses for data analysts. Our 8-week undergraduate courses are:
- 100% online
- Career-focused
- Asynchronous (no set class times)
- Just $330 per credit hour ($990 per course)
Best of all? You'll have access to valuable resources at SNHU, such as your academic advisor and career counselors. Is data analytics very difficult?
The difficulty of data analytics is subjective. But to succeed in data analytics, it can be helpful to develop some specific skills and knowledge.
Technical skills:
- Programming languages, such as Python, R and SQL
- Statistical methods for analysis and modeling
- Tools and software, like Power BI and Tableau
Analytical skills:
- Pattern recognition in data sets
- Attention to detail for quality assurance
- Problem solving
Business skills:
- Grasp of business terms and objectives
- Communication skills for explaining reports to stakeholders
Know that people with many different strengths and experiences become data analysts. No matter your educational or professional background, there are plenty of courses for data analysts that could be right for you.
In fact, Southern New Hampshire University offers online data analytics courses and programs that require zero coding or analytics knowledge to get started. And whether you want to complete just one course or an entire degree, you can earn college credits from an accredited university.
How do I become a data analyst with no experience?
To kick off a career as a data analyst, you'll want to start with a foundational education in data analytics. For many people, this means taking courses for data analysts, getting a bachelor's degree in the subject or even going back to school for a master's if you already have your undergrad.
As you work on getting basic knowledge and theory down, you'll also want to develop your technical skills – think programming, data manipulation and statistical visualization. A good course or program will have you solving problems using real data. As you work on these projects, you'll create a portfolio you can use to showcase your skills and achievements to future employers.
After completing an undergraduate degree or similar program, look for entry-level data analyst positions where you can put your skills to the test and learn on the job. And if you’re looking to further advance your career, you may consider getting professional certificates or pursuing an advanced degree.
At Southern New Hampshire University, all data analytics online programs and courses are career-focused – meaning you'll learn highly sought knowledge and skills while working on projects with real-world applications. And by earning your degree online, you don't have to put your life on pause.
Is data analytics a lot of math?
Data analytics involves being good with numbers, but you don't necessarily have to be an expert mathematician to succeed as a data analyst.
As an entry-level data analyst, you'll need basic data, problem-solving and pattern recognition skills for tasks like database management, reporting and visualization. While foundational math knowledge will serve you well in data analysis, you'll have plenty of tools to help you make your calculations.
As you grow in your career, you may find yourself interested in roles such as data scientist or data engineer. These titles come with more complex responsibilities where good math skills are necessary. Tasks involving predictive analytics and exploratory data analysis, for example, will involve more advanced mathematical concepts.
