Online Math Course Overview
Southern New Hampshire University's MAT-135 The Heart of Mathematics course can help you get a jumpstart on your Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics or upskill for your career. It's a discussion-based, collaborative course that explores the beauty of mathematics through topics like fractals, chaos theory and topology instead of focusing solely on formal equations.
The course is included in our bachelor's in mathematics program. So while it can be taken as a standalone course, its credits can also be applied toward the full degree if you choose to continue.

Curriculum
MAT-135 The Heart of Mathematics is an 8-week course broken into distinct modules that cover topics like logic puzzles, chaos theory and more. You'll learn how to communicate and problem solve without the constraints of formal mathematical notation. You'll also build knowledge in fundamental areas of higher mathematics, including number theory, infinity, geometry, topology, fractals and more.

Additional Information:
- Laptop or desktop? Whichever you choose depends on your personal preference and work style, though laptops tend to offer more flexibility.
- Note: Chromebooks (Chrome OS) and iPads (iOS) do not meet the minimum requirements for coursework at SNHU. These offer limited functionality and do not work with some course technologies. They are not acceptable as the only device you use for coursework. While these devices are convenient and may be used for some course functions, they cannot be your primary device. SNHU does, however, have an affordable laptop option that it recommends: Dell Latitude 3301 with Windows 10.
- Office 365 Pro Plus is available free of charge to all SNHU students and faculty. The Office suite will remain free while you are a student at SNHU. Upon graduation you may convert to a paid subscription if you wish. Terms subject to change at Microsoft's discretion. Review system requirements for Microsoft 365 plans for business, education and government.
- Antivirus software: Check with your ISP as they may offer antivirus software free of charge to subscribers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you take a math class online?
Yes, you can take a math class online, and there are definite advantages to doing so. Most notably, SNHU's classes are asynchronous, meaning there are no set class times.
Of course, there are weekly assignment deadlines, but when you choose to work on them is up to you. While time management skills are key, you'll have support every step of the way. Not only will you have access to an academic advisor, you'll also communicate with your instructor and classmates via our online learning management system, Brightspace, and email.
Is online math harder?
Whether math is more difficult online or in person largely depends on how you learn best.
SNHU's online programs are not designed to be easier or harder than their in-person counterparts. Southern New Hampshire University is accredited by the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE), which means we meet specific standards of quality and have the tools and resources required to help students succeed.
