Frequently Asked Questions
Are summer courses worth it?
Absolutely — especially if you'd like to save time and money while pursuing your degree.
Though traditional students typically take summers off, you can elect to continue your studies and earn credits (in just eight weeks) that can apply to your on-campus or online college degree. This, in turn, can help minimize the time it takes you to graduate and sooner get you into the workforce, where you can make a living. For those with lighter summer schedules, this is a particularly great option.
Online summer courses at SNHU can also help you save money. Our application cost is $0, and our 3-credit undergraduate classes are only $990 — that's just $330 per credit. Because of this, many students enrolled full-time at other universities opt to take a transfer-friendly class at SNHU and apply the credits they receive to their home university degree.
How do online summer courses work?
Decided you'd like to take an online summer course? Great! To begin, we recommend speaking with your home university's registrar to confirm they will accept transfer credits from SNHU.
Next, you can start narrowing down which of our nearly 500 transfer-friendly courses interest you. A good way to do that is by exploring our academic catalog. There you will find detailed overviews of each course.
Once you've selected the class or classes you'd like to take, you can apply for $0. (That's right — it's free!) If accepted and subsequently enrolled, you'll then spend eight weeks immersed in hands-on learning under the guide of one of our expert instructors — all online and all on your own schedule.
With successful completion of each undergraduate class comes three transfer-friendly credits and invaluable knowledge that can enhance your career.
What is the best course to do online?
It's hard to pick favorites, because we offer so many! Students can choose from nearly 500 online, transfer-friendly courses. Our 3-credit undergraduate classes are only eight weeks long — making them the perfect length for summer break — and quite affordable at just $960.

Is taking two summer classes too much?
At SNHU, you are considered to have a full-time course load if you are enrolled in two online classes per term. Many people choose to go this route and find it to be very manageable.
That said, you should earnestly consider your personal schedule when making this decision. Taking two classes at a time is a great way to speed along your progress toward earning a degree, but if you have considerable outside commitments to balance, one summer class might be more realistic.
It's also important to take into account the multitude of asynchronous courses we offer. Because there are no set class meeting times and you can access coursework on your own schedule, you may be able to maximize your time more than you originally thought.
Regardless of whether you choose to take one or two online summer courses simultaneously, you'll be making solid progress — and that's something to be proud of.
Do summer courses impact your GPA?
Yes, the grade you earn from an online summer course will factor into your overall GPA at SNHU. However, if you’re enrolled at another university and attending SNHU simply for individual courses, only the credits will transfer back to your home institution — not your GPA. (Note: Please refer to your home institution’s transfer credit policy for details on transfer eligibility.)
Are summer classes easier or harder?
Our courses maintain the same curriculum year round, so they aren't easier or harder based on the term you complete them in. However, if you're experiencing difficulties with your online summer coursework at any time throughout the term, you can take advantage of 24/7 on-demand tutoring in Brightspace, our learning management system. There, you will be matched with the first available tutor in your subject area — no appointment necessary — which typically happens within just 60 seconds.
What are the easiest summer classes to take?
That all depends on your scholastic strengths! What's easy for one student, may not be for another.
If you're skilled in technology and want to take a course that both enhances and shows off your skills, you might consider taking HIM-215: Coding & Classification Systems. In this class, you'll learn about the central technologies, terminologies and systems involved in medical coding. You'll build the skills you need to create and maintain a central hub for all patient data in a healthcare setting — from the lab to insurance — and gain career-focused skills.
More of a writer than a coder? ENG-226: Introduction to Creative Writing might be the perfect online summer course for you. Designed to acquaint students with the craft of creative writing and the skills required in subsequent creative writing workshops, this course will help you explore craft issues like point of view, dialogue and dramatic scene development. You'll be assigned a number of writing exercises and share in the reading and discussion of fellow classmates' work and published pieces.
If you're interested in enhancing your business skills, BUS-210: Managing and Leading in Business is a great option. In this course, you'll explore leadership/management theories and learn how to incorporate them in one's own personal style for effective contribution and collaboration in diverse team environments. You'll also gain the skills necessary to lead in various organizational structures and examine how the functional areas of business are interrelated.
MAT-240: Applied Statistics is another great option. If you love math, you'll feel right at home learning to apply statistical techniques to a variety of applications in business and the social sciences. You'll also learn how to solve statistical problems by hand and through the use of computer software. Topics include probability distribution functions, sampling distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing and linear regression.
Of course, these are just a few of our most popular transfer-friendly courses. In total, there are nearly 500 to choose from, and they're offered in a wide range of subjects. With so many options, we're confident you'll find a course suited to your skill set.
How do I prepare for college in summer?
If you're planning to take online summer courses at SNHU in hopes of earning your degree at another university faster, it's imperative to confirm your home university will accept these transfer credits. A simple way to check this is by speaking with your home university's registrar before enrolling at SNHU.
Once you've confirmed SNHU credits will transfer to your home university and are successfully enrolled, we highly recommend mapping out a personal schedule you can refer to throughout the coming term. This entails calculating how many hours will be dedicated each day to your coursework versus your job and personal life. Summertime tends to present a wealth of opportunity for distraction, so committing to a weekly schedule will help keep you on track.
Another helpful step to take before your summer classes begin is to familiarize yourself with Brightspace, our learning management system. This is where you'll access all of your coursework and partake in discussions with your instructor and peers. You'll gain access to this space two weeks before class, so be sure to take a bit of time to explore it.
What's it like to take an online summer course?
While taking online summer courses at SNHU, you'll be deeply immersed in hands-on learning led by industry leaders who have relevant, real-world experience and are accomplished in online learning.
Since classes are 100% online and have no set meeting times, you'll be given an account in Brightspace (our online learning management system) where you can access your coursework and class discussion boards at any time.
At the beginning of each week, your instructor will lay out everything to come in the days ahead, so you can budget your time accordingly. Weekly assignments may include a short research paper or collaborative project, while larger assignments might be spread out across an entire term.
If you have any questions along the way, you can easily start a conversation with your instructors or peers within the class discussion board. The space is intended to keep you connected not only to new information, but others, so you can work in unison to successfully complete the course.

Why should I take online summer courses?
Taking online summer courses at SNHU can be a great way to get ahead — especially if you need to earn a few extra credits before jumping back into the fall semester at your home institution. Even better? Our undergraduate courses are just eight-weeks long and have no set class times, so you can learn at your own pace and schedule studying around summer fun.
Taking online summer courses may also help you save money. We offer one of the lowest online tuition rates in the country at just $330 per undergraduate credit, and because our courses are offered online, there's no need to pay for room and board.
Even if you're not enrolled in a degree program elsewhere, taking online summer courses can still be a good opportunity. Not only can you learn new skills, you can also reinforce ones you've learned on the job with a formal education. Plus, if you decide to earn a degree later on, you may have the opportunity to put your previously earned credits to use.
However, if summer courses aren't for you, don't worry. We offer six undergraduate and five graduate terms every year, so you can learn whenever is best for you.
Note: If your goal is to earn transfer credits, it's important to verify your home institution's policies prior to enrolling at SNHU.
